No Weapon Formed

Behold, I have created the smith

who blows the fire of coals

and produces a weapon for its purpose.

I have also created the ravager to destroy;

no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,

and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.

This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD

and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.

In this well known passage from Isaiah, God is affirming the destiny of the nation of Israel.  Even though God will momentarily turn His back on the nation of Israel, Isaiah 54:7, with everlasting love He will embrace Israel, 54:8.  The apparently deserted wife of the LORD would experience a judgment akin to the judgment that was poured out on the earth in the days of Noah, 54:9.  This judgment would bring Israel back to God causing Him to take an oath that He will no longer be angry with the nation of Israel, 54:10.

In this future reality, Jerusalem (or should I write a new Jerusalem?) would have precious stones in her foundation, 54:11.  Her gates would also be composed of precious jewels, 54:12.  All of the children within the walls of this new Jerusalem would be personally taught by the LORD, 54:13.  This future arrangement within these city walls would not be under any oppression whatsoever, 54:14.  Truly this will be a city of peace.

This passage must be future from our standpoint.  At no point in time has the judgment from God upon the nation of Israel been lifted.  To this day there remains an estrangement between the God of Israel and the nation of Israel.  Exactly how will this relationship be restored?  I can’t rightly say.  But if this scripture here is any indication, God will use some type of calamity to bring the nation of Israel to repentance, which will usher in the fulfillment of these verses.  There will be a literal city here on earth to correspond with this description of this new Jerusalem.

In the mean time, Israel can take comfort in the fact that nothing can prevent God’s purposes from ultimately being fulfilled.  God affirms His sovereignty over every person in Isaiah 54:16-17.  These men who form a weapon to be used in a war have also been formed themselves.  God does not say that these weapons that are formed are not harmful.  God appeals to His role as the Creator of every man who would be the creator of a weapon, even a weapon of mass destruction.

Many are afraid that Iran will develop a nuclear weapon.  Many are worried that USA technology will fall into the hands of third world military dictators.  Everybody is watching the middle east right now wondering who will emerge victorious in Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, and Yemen.  Muslims?  More fear.  Let me remind my readers that Muammar Gaddafi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Hosni Mubarak were all created by the God of Israel.  Any person who works in a nuclear reactor, fires a gun, or holds a position in any government were all created by the God who inspired these words, “No weapon formed against you will prosper.”  Somehow in God’s infinite wisdom, He has all things within His complete sovereign control.

I’m not saying we should be in favor of violence against the nation of Israel.  I’m just saying we shouldn’t live in fear of what evil men may do.  God will bring about the future reality of the New Jerusalem, described in both Isaiah 54 and Revelation 21.  Evil men may cause the death of many righteous people, but that does not change the fact that God has decreed that the nation of Israel will experience that everlasting compassion.

Don’t fear the weapons makers, because God formed the weapons makers.  Fear God.

Have fun and stay busy – Luke 19:13
